French Onion Soup Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large French Onion Soup Recipe, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon of sugar
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 bay leaf
  • 2 sprigs of fresh thyme (or 1/2 teaspoon dried thyme)
  • 1.5 litres of beef stock
  • 150ml of dry white wine (optional)
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • Slices of baguette
  • 150g of Gruyère cheese, grated

Instructions:

  1. In a large, heavy-bottomed pan, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat.
  2. Add the sliced French Onion Soup Recipe and cook, stirring frequently, until they become soft and caramelized, about 30-40 minutes. Sprinkle sugar over the onions to aid in caramelization.
  3. Stir in the minced garlic, bay leaf, and thyme. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
  4. Pour in the white wine (if using) to deglaze the pan, scraping up any brown bits from the bottom. Allow it to simmer for a few minutes to let the alcohol cook off.
  5. Add the beef stock to the pan and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat, cover, and simmer for about 20-30 minutes to allow the flavors to meld. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
  6. While the soup is simmering, preheat your grill (broiler) on high.
  7. Ladle the hot soup into ovenproof bowls or crocks.
  8. Place a slice or two of baguette on top of each bowl of soup.
  9. Sprinkle a generous amount of grated Gruyère cheese over the bread slices.
  10. Place the bowls under the grill (broiler) until the cheese is melted and bubbling and has turned golden brown, about 2-3 minutes. Keep a close eye on it to prevent burning.
  11. Carefully remove the bowls from the grill (they will be hot!) and let them cool for a minute or two before serving.
  12. Serve your homemade French Onion Soup hot, with the cheesy top creating a delightful crust over the rich, flavourful broth.

Enjoy your classic French Onion Soup Recipe!
